08 Dec Recycling bench – Athens Future Bench 2010
Type: Competition entry – Athens Future Bench 2010
Designer: Victoria Al. Lytra
Location: Athens
Year: 2010
The concept of “recycling” bench derives of ecological sensitivity that is very up-to-date nowadays. The main idea is based on the fact that plastic is not easily recycled, so the “recycling” of plastic bottles can be their re-use by creating a bench. The designed future bench consists of a metallic base (of recycled aluminium) with 16 holes – sockets where plastic bottles are wedged. These bottles are full of water so as to comprise a cooling mean for those sitting in the rather hot climate of Athens, since water buffers large fluctuations in temperature. Its form follows a curvilinear geometry that fulfills ergonomic sitting requirements. Moreover, the designed object is adaptable since it comprises a component that can be multiplied and connected, creating in this way a bigger bench that can host more people. Concluding, “recycling” bench has a rather ecological character with the use of specific materials and its cooling property. It is easily constructed and adapted to specific needs, while its fluid form is very contemporary.
